The text book defines neo-Aristotelian as the traditional method of criticism which is concerned with the effect of something on the audience and analyzing artifacts to determine not only their effect, but their importance to the message.
The three steps of analysising an artifact are to recenstruct the context where the artifact occured, apply the five cannons to the artifact, and to assess its impact on the audience.
The five cannons of rhetoric are invention, organization, style, memory, and delivery.
